Okay, while I wait for stores to open so that I can attempt this blindingly stupid story I've been assigned, have more recs!

1) Apparition No. 12 (The Scientific Method Remix) (Harry Potter)
Everyone and her dog's recced this one. Because it's good. It's a very sweet look at Hermione and through her at Sirius and Remus. But really, Hermione is the star in this one, and she is so lovingly characterized that I forget about Emma Watson and her tendency to play "bitch" where the script said "nerd".

I'm also going to rec the original Apparition No. 12 by krabapple because it looks a little more deeply at Sirius and Remus and is written in a really lovely way. And also because I love the last scene so, so much.

2) Photograph (You're the Only One I Wanna Touch Remix) (Harry Potter)
It helps that it's a remix of one of my favourite stories by [livejournal.com profile] mackittenx, Photograph, but the remix is beautiful in its own right. It's really cute and a little sad, and I particularly like the explanation given for how Sirius got the photo album. (Because I am developing a weakness for prissy-pureblood-scion!Sirius in my old age!)

3) Sleeping With Ghosts (I'll Have What He's Having Remix), remix of Sleeping with Ghosts by Grace (Harry Potter)
Because it makes me make big wibbly face and shout, "Oh, Tonks" which is not something I ever expected to do post-HBP. It's just a terribly, painfully incisive story about Tonks, and it's got the kind of cruel irony in places that has always really, really appealed to me.
"She keeps waiting for someone to discover her where she's hiding, to frame her face and say, 'That's it, you're the girl I've been looking for.' For someone to say, 'Don't change. I like you as you are.' She waits long and hard for Remus to invite her in."
4) Learning To Fly (Is Like Falling Remix), remix of Symbiosis by Dana Woods (Firefly)
Mal/Kaylee is not my pairing of choice, so I was caught off guard by how much I liked this story. And maybe that has a lot to do with how the Mal/Kaylee aspect is really secondary to the just Kaylee part of the story. It's written in an absolutely incredible voice, and it hurts so damn much, except for the parts where it made me laugh, and isn't that just Firefly through and through? I especially like the bits we get about Wash and Kaylee and their friendship.

I still of have a heck of a lot more to read, but here (in no particular order) are the stories that have caught my eye so far.

cut because a lot of stories rock )

And now you'll have to excuse me because I really do have an essay to write.

Sometime near the end of last year, when I took a look at what I'd managed to write in 2005 and saw that it was rather lacking -- at least quantity-wise -- I decided to make like [livejournal.com profile] elira and start a random text file to keep track of the things that popped into my head -- the little bits and pieces that I liked but that I knew would never get any bigger -- in the hopes that this would get me writing more.

I know WiP amnesty day was a few days back, but these were never really WiPs to begin with. However, with a tough remix ahead of me, it's probably a good idea to clear the slate and dump all the things I might otherwise try and distract myself/procrastinate with.

So for what it's worth, in various states of unpolished and crappy and organized by fandom, I bring you the Free Writing.txt 2005.

So, I saw Serenity. I...don't think I can really talk about it yet as I keep getting overcome by sniffles for obvious reasons. And while I loved the movie a lot, I'm torn over whether I want a sequel because A) I still have many questions unanswered but B) those obvious reasons.

In other news, I (like everyone else in the world, I suspect) have this enormous, terminal crush on Dr. James Wilson. Ominous!

And in the interest of proving that I'm actually doing something productive (yeah, right) and continuing the overdue fannish update, I give you an excerpt from the current WiP project:
In the dim light filtering in through the windows, Remus can see enough of Sirius's features to catch the sour face he makes. This amounts to another betrayal, Remus guesses, another glimpse of the new, adult James -- the guy Sirius isn't even sure he wants as a friend. With the light to his back, Remus is pretty certain his face is all in shadow to Sirius, which is good because he has no idea what to do with this information.

Now back to writing a fake obituary of a fake newsman for my very real reporting class.

So, I bought the complete first season of House today. This is all [livejournal.com profile] elira's fault -- don't try to deny it.

But I have yet to find a Kaylee shirt, however, despite manic searching. This is also all [livejournal.com profile] elira's fault.

(We are going to the Serenity premiere in costume, you see. I'm being Kaylee, and she's being Inara -- oh, and [livejournal.com profile] smirnov_ wants to come, and she's willing to try for River -- is there a Zoe in the house? Yes, we are just that dorky.)

...I love you, Susan.

And a big happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] elira!
