3 songs by performers who are coming to Bluesfest this year:
Final Fantasy - This Lamb Sells Condos
I would basically love He Poos Clouds (the album this song comes from) for the concept alone: eight songs about the eight schools of magic in D&D. There is something heart-warming about the kind of consummate nerdery that would give rise to an idea like that. I feel a kinship! It's nifty! But it also helps that Final Fantasy is sort of like a more accessible Mice Parade - with lots of layered but simple instrumentation and vocals that have a little more direction and purpose. "This Lamb Sells Condos" doesn't feature any of the semi-trademark violin bits, but it has a great reoccurring piano theme that is twinkly and lighthearted. The song is apparently about the Toronto condominium market, and there's a short article about it at the Torontoist.
Final Fantasy plays on July 9th @ 9:15PM. Mice Parade, coincidentally, has a show at Barrymore's on May 22 (which I would be very happy to go to if anyone else was interested?).
Bob Schneider - Tumblin' Dice
Oh, Bob Schneider. I don't know who conned you into playing in Ottawa, but I am unbelievably glad they did. Bob Schneider rocks. No matter what he's doing, he rocks. At worst, he doesn't do anything other than rock; I recently got a hold of The Californian which, while a good CD, is mostly predictably heavy guitar + scratchy man-vocals. At best, though, he rocks and then some. "Tumblin' Dice" is laid-back and cool which is both thematically and vocally appropriate. Think Randy Newman circa Monster Inc., except with a little more... sex appeal? Or something.
Bob Schneider plays twice! July 7th @ 5:45PM and July 8th @7:45PM. Shockingly, Randy Newman will also be around on July 10th but as I don't particularly like him, I'm not particularly suggesting anyone go to his show.
Ndidi Onukwulu - Hey There
One of my perennial complaints about Bluesfest is that a lot of the performers it showcases do not play blues. Ndidi Onukwulu almost makes up for that this year. The woman is effin' blues personified. Her voice is just incredible - smooth and low and powerful, and thankfully she never belts like a lot of singers with similar voices are wont to do. And her guitarist (one Madgascar Slim) is pretty outstanding on his own. I make no secret of the fact that I like twang and sharp plucking from guitars and how he pulls that off with an electric guitar, I do not know. "Hey There" is probably the most rocking song on her No, I Never CD, but the other songs fill in the space with jazzy bits and slow ballads and gospel numbers, so it is all pretty awesome regardless.
Ndidi Onukwulu plays July 12th @ 9:30PM.
