Is anyone else having issue with this whole "MPs should vote their conscience" debate? I mean, the Globe obviously isn't given that they ran that hopelessly sobby story this week on that poor, poor old man who had to get up each morning, brush his teeth, and drag his poor arthritis-racked body of to work, certain in the knowledge that Paul Martin was requiring him to vote yes to same sex marriage.

God, poor man. Poor, poor, poor man. Have I mentioned how poor this poor man is? Because the Globe did frequently.

Should MPs be allowed to vote their conscience? No. Never. Fuck you, you're elected to represent me (or the people of your riding). I don't give a damn about your morality. Your job isn't about you. It's about me. It's about being my mouthpiece. It's about streamlining government so that the 32,507,874 odd Canadians don't have to vote on every little thing.

More than anyone else in the world, you are not important for your job. What you think is not important. Just get up there and read the lines you're handed. That's indirect democracy for you, and it sucks but it's the best we've got.

(And PS. the majority deciding the rights of the minority is still stupid even if you are representing your riding.)

(Oh, and congratulations New York on joining the ranks of the sane.)
